Insiders say the Verve concept that is set to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show is a thinly disguised take on the next-generation Fiesta small car for Ford of Europe and as such, embodies the principles of "kinetic design" found on the larger S-Max and Mondeo. More significant on this side of the pond is that this New Age hatchback is a good bet to make it to the U.S. as a so-called B-class urban car based on Mazda2 mechanicals.
The Verve has a long roof, sculpted body panels and an upscale appearance thanks to the generous use of chrome trim and rich colors. However, the current trend for gigantic grilles is taken to an extreme on the Verve. This gaping eggcrate affair is topped by a second slender opening carrying the Ford badge. The tall nose is needed to comply with European pedestrian crash standards. The style is far from original; current Peugeots and the previous-generation Chrysler Sebring had large lower grilles like the Verve's. This face is the only off-putting feature of what is a very handsome 3-door.
Metallic accents and design cues focused on movement are carried over into the interior, which features a center-stack module chock full of navigation, communication and entertainment systems not generally found on cars in this class. In addition, the switches and controls were developed with the same aesthetics and ergonomics used in cellphone design. The interior is trimmed in leather, including a burgundy upper dash contrasted by green-hued black leather on the lower panels. The seats are also trimmed in the same burgundy material with electric magenta piping, which further adds luxury-car cues to an economy-car package.
Since the Verve is primarily a styling exercise, few details were made available regarding the mechanical package.
