More Music From Gladiator

The best thing with this second release of music from Ridley Scott's blockbuster Gladiator is not the music, it's the liner notes. For some reason, the score never attracted my interest in the first place, but this second CD makes for a very interesting listening experience thanks to the notes written by the composer himself.

Hans Zimmer explains in a very open and sort of friendly way how different ideas were realised, and how some remarkably strong cues included on this CD actually never made it to the final cut of the film. His story about the creation of the Gladiator score provides a very unusual context for the score - how often do we get to read detailed comments from the composer, on every single track?

What I remember from the first album is the driving action music, recalling Gustav Holst's 'Mars' from 'The Planets'. "Of course I'm using the same language, the same vocabulary if not the same syntax," Zimmer comments in the liner notes, continuing: "I was thinking more of Mussorgsky, of William Walton, of the primal force of Stravinsky". Included on this CD is the original synth demo Zimmer did of this 'Gladiator Waltz'. Interesting stuff indeed.

However, 'More Music from Gladiator', concentrates more on the emotional material from the film. The opening cue, 'Duduk of the North', features the wonderful duduk playing by Djivan Gasparyan, and is perhaps one of Zimmer's most striking ethnical compositions. Another highlight is 'Not Yet', which is an early take of Lisa Gerrard singing the 'Earth' theme. Very beautiful.

Apparently, isn't it good to know that the man from your nation assisted the film music writer, no matter if he called a composer or just a player. Besides, he played the music he composed (!) but not Zimmerman or someone another, that means, that he's a composer and took part in organising the Gladiator OST.
