Just a couple of days ago I read about Macmillian quitting to publish print dictionaries. I felt sad and a bit empty that the global simplification and electronisation of our lives has really been stepping forward with overwhelming speed. "On the street" will be used to describe some fixed location, like "The bank is on Oren street", while "IN the street" is used to denote that your are standing in the middle of the street. And there's a tendency that "in the street" is used more by the British and "on the street" by the Americans.
